Initially, very dry air in the low layers of the atmosphere will prevent any precip from reaching the ground, but this dry air should be overcome by 20 to 22Z - allowing light snowfall to reach the surface. Low level jet expected to increase to nearly 50/55 kts from the southwest with the nose of this jet pointed at a strengthening thermal gradient (i.e. frontogenesis) over our region.
This should result in vigorous lifting of the column over our region with enhanced precip for several hours tonight. With the amount of WAA occurring with this system, some thunder and lightning is possible.

Forecast model soundings suggest precip will initially be all snow - with a period of heavy snow possible mainly from 00z to 04z tonight in the Louisville area. Snow rates during this time could be as high as 1 inch / hour.
As storm sytem continues to strengthen, WAA will continue across our region with a gradual warming of the low layers also continuing. By 04z or 05z tonight, low levels expected to climb above critical changing the snow over to a brief period of sleet - then over to freezing rain.
Freezing rain is expected to become the dominant P-type overnight - with significant icing (.25 to .50") possible from Louisville and points north. P-type should go to mainly light rain in Louisville Tuesday morning before diminishing by midday - but stay freezing rain in areas north.
Snow amounts expected to be anywhere from 3 inches on the low side to 6 inches on the high side from near Louisville and points north, followed by the sleet and freezing rain. Travel is expected to become quite hazardous this evening. Please allow extra time to get to your destination if traveling tonight, and if your situation allows... delay your travels until conditions improve will will be tomorrow - especially by afternoon.
